Basic Tahini Sauce - condiments and dressings recipe by Carolyn Cohen

Tahini is a perfect condiment. Use it as a drizzle on cooked protein, veggies or salads. Make a thicker sauce and use it as you would hummus, as a dip for veggies or pita. Spread it on a plate and garnish with a lentil salad, cherry tomato salad or a seasoned chopped meat dish.

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp. tahini paste
  • 1-2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • Ice water to thin
  • Pinch or two of Kosher salt

Instructions

  1. 1

In a medium size bowl and using a whisk, mix together the tahini, lemon juice and 3-4 tbsp. ice water. The consistency should be similar to ketchup (I know, poor comparison). As you add the lemon and water, the tahini will thicken at first, thin it with lemon or water. Taste for flavour, it should be a little lemony but not overpowering. Add more lemon or water to achieve the desired consistency. Makes about ½-1 cup

Tips & Storage

How to Store
Store in a glass jar or airtight container in the refrigerator. Most homemade condiments and dressings keep well for 1-2 weeks.
Serving Tip
Bring to room temperature before serving for the best flavor. Shake or stir well, as homemade dressings may separate.
Batch Cooking Tip
Make a double or triple batch — homemade condiments elevate any meal and are so much healthier than store-bought versions.
